The J.C. Hispaniola Fund, Inc. a non-profit, non political 501 (c) (3) organization
founded in 1998 by Jean Charles, a native of Haiti, who was moved by the devastation
left in the wake of Hurricane Georges to mount a disaster relief effort to help the
people of Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic and he has
been at it since then. Through the generosity of our NGO partners, to date over $4
millions worth of medicines and medical supplies have been brought by the Fund to the
people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic who are some of the poorest in the Caribbean.
Each year, over 8,000 individuals, mostly poor women and children have benefited from our efforts.
Working with local clinics and health care workers, The Hispaniola Fund provides primary care to over
5,000 people each year in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Those who cannot afford to pay a peso
receive the services free of charge. We have also delivered over 2,000 medical kits to families in
remote areas who have no access to transportation and cannot make the journey on foot to the clinics.
We also organize health fairs in busy market places and village squares where people receive medical
consultation and medicines on the spot, particularly in the bateyes of Barahona, La Victoria, and Monte
Plata in the Dominican Republic and La Vallee de Jacmel in Haiti. The most common afflictions are
parasitic diseases, very common among children, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes,
respiratory diseases, and vaginal infections among women due to water contamination, other bacterial
infections.
And the most requested items are antibiotics, analgesics for pain relief, gastrointestinal remedies,
medicine for cardiovascular and respiratory disease and nutritional supplements, as well as personal
hygiene products. Through our training on good sanitation and personal hygiene, there has been a
significant reduction of bacterial diseases in the areas where we have worked.
The Board is composed of dedicated individuals with expertise in health care, social work, elder
services and small business management.
